A Path to Reconciliation Acknowledging 100 Years Since the Chinese Exclusion Act

Introducing

THE WALL

Uniting Communities Through Art

Welcome to 'The Wall,' an awe-inspiring art installation that aims to shatter societal barriers and cultivate unity within our community. Through the power of art, we strive to create a visceral experience that challenges societal divisions and promotes dialogue and understanding.

Background

The City of Burnaby has a rich and diverse cultural history, but it is vital to address the unfortunate discrimination that minority groups have faced. This July 1st marks the 100th anniversary of the discriminatory Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923, which caused many families to be separated permanently and ongoing devastation to Chinese Canadian communities.

In line with the City of Burnaby's commitment to reconciliation with the Chinese-Canadian community, Yi Chen and Muchen, an acclaimed Chinese-Canadian artist group, have proposed an installation entitled "The Wall".

About the Installation

"The Wall" is an evocative ice installation serving as a powerful social commentary on societal divisions and our collective journey towards unity. Going beyond the realm of traditional art, it aims to foster dialogue, encourage understanding, and catalyze change. The installation takes inspiration from historical structures, most notably the Berlin Wall, symbolically representing the invisible barriers born from years of racial and cultural misunderstandings and discrimination. The ice medium highlights these barriers, prompting reflection on their existence and the urgent need for their dismantling.

Unique in its transient nature, "The Wall" is designed to undergo a literal and symbolic transformation under the sun's warmth on the event day. This dynamic aspect emphasizes that societal barriers, despite appearing solid and impenetrable, can indeed be broken down, underscoring that change, while gradual, is within our reach. Interactivity is integral to the installation's concept. As a tangible manifestation of an emotional journey, "The Wall" guides individuals from division and misunderstanding towards unity and acceptance.

Artistic Vision

Yi Chen + Muchen have collaborated to create a visually stunning design utilizing ice as a medium to convey a narrative about societal change and the pursuit of unity. As it melts under the warmth of the sun on the day of the event, the wall undergoes a literal and symbolic transformation, emphasizing the notion that societal barriers can be broken down and that change is possible. Attendees are encouraged to observe the melting transformation of the wall and reflect on the need for personal responsibility and active participation in driving societal transformation.

Collaborating Partners

The City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Village Museum are collaborating closely with our team to carry out a project that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923. This initiative aims to recognize historic discrimination against individuals of Chinese descent in Burnaby, while also promoting reconciliation with the Chinese Canadian community. The primary objective of this project is to acknowledge and apologize for past injustices, fostering a greater understanding and healing within the community. By amplifying the voices and significant contributions of Chinese Canadians, the City of Burnaby acknowledges their substantial role in the growth of the city over the past century. In alignment with these goals, this public art installation will be created, serving as a medium for reflection and dialogue. The art installation will take the form of an ice wall, symbolizing the barriers that were once erected against the Chinese community. As the ice melts, it represents the hope for a brighter future and signifies the dismantling of these discriminatory barriers.

Through this collaborative effort, the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Village Museum, alongside NAFVan and FEIART, aspire to create a poignant and impactful artistic tribute to the Chinese Canadian community, while also contributing to the cultivation of a more inclusive and respectful society.
