WRITING AN IMPACTFUL ARTIST’S STATEMENT

In partnership with NAFVan, the VIVA Alliance is holding a writing workshop for artists.

Learning objectives:

  • Understating the purpose and function of artist statements.

  • Understanding what information to include about the artist and the artwork.

  • Reviewing key composition approaches to enhance the impact of the work.

  • Understanding basic style and formatting requirements. 

  • Adjusting the content of artist statements to fulfil requirements in different contexts (gallery requirements, artist call criteria, grants).

Learners will also have the opportunity to discuss relevant concerns with existing biography and project statements during the Q&A. 

Instructor Maryam Babaei

Maryam Babaei (she/her) is a contributing member of Vancouver’s Iranian Visual Arts (VIVA) Alliance as well as a senior writer for a public health research firm. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Art History from the University of British Columbia, and her Master’s degree in Literature and Modernity from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Maryam’s academic research background is in exploring representations of time and memory in 20th century theatre, poetry, and visual arts. More recently, her work within VIVA Alliance is focused on using the power of the written word to support visual artists in finding their audience and communicating with their local communities in more meaningful and culturally impactful ways.
